MAJ OCTAVIA L. BLACKWELL

55TH SIGNAL COMPANY COMMANDER

Major Octavia Blackwell was born in Salisbury, North Carolina. She attended Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina, where she majored in Mass Communication, minored in Sports Management, and varsity lettered four years on the Campbell University Women’s Basketball Team. She graduated in 2007. She earned her commission through the Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Benning, Georgia in 2010. Her military schooling includes the Signal Officer Basic Course, Airborne School, Unit Movement Officer Course, Marine Corps Expeditionary School, the Marine Corps Advanced Communications Officer Course, the Company Commander’s – First Sergeant’s Course, and the Resident Command and General Staff Officers Course at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Major Blackwell has spent her career providing communications support to deployed forward headquarters and Special Operations Forces throughout the world. Her first assignment was HHC, 508th BSTB, 82ND ABN DIV (FORSCOM), Fort Bragg North Carolina, where she deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom XII as the Field Detention Site guard force Platoon Leader and OIC (Officer-In-Charge). Later, she was assigned to C CO, 508th BSTB, 4BCT, 82ND ABN DIV (FORSCOM), Fort Bragg North Carolina, serving as the Platoon Leader and Executive Officer for Charlie Company from 2012-2014. In 2014, she was selected to attend the Marine Corps Expeditionary Warfare School. Upon completion, Major Blackwell was assigned to HHC 95TH CA BDE (A) (SP), Fort Bragg North Carolina where she was responsible for providing reliable world-wide tactical and garrison communication to higher headquarters, headquarters, and five CA Battalions. From 2016-2018 she was assigned to HHC, 92ND CA BN (A) (SP), Fort Bragg North Carolina, where she served as Battalion Signal Officer for the only active component airborne Civil Affairs battalion aligned to the U.S. European Command (EUCOM) and Special Operations Command (SOCOM). From February 2018 to July 2018, assigned to 93D Signal Brigade at Fort Eustis, Major Blackwell served as the Deputy Plans Division Chief, where she planned and executed project management enterprise and theatre-level projects for the 93D Signal BDE and the 7th Signal Command and NETCOM AOR. July 2018-2020 she was selected to command Delta Company, 1-222d Aviation Regiment Battalion, providing to the force the newest Aviation maintainers.
